From the moment you meet Andy Archer, his passion for engineering, surveying, and Kier + Wright (K+W) is palpable. It doesn’t take long to feel the energy he brings to his work—an enthusiasm that has defined his 26-year career with the company. Now, as he steps into retirement, Andy leaves behind more than just completed projects—he leaves a legacy of mentorship, innovation, and a commitment to excellence that has shaped K+W and inspired his colleagues.

Andy’s journey with K+W began in 1998 under unique circumstances. Tony McCants, the company’s then-CEO, reached out with a job offer during a pivotal moment in Andy’s life. Following the loss of his father, with whom he had worked for over two decades in civil engineering and surveying, Andy was looking for a way to continue the work he loved. That phone call was more than an offer, it was an opportunity to build something extraordinary. From the very start, the team at K+W made him feel at home, providing the support and camaraderie he needed during a difficult time.

Over the years, Andy has played an integral role in some of K+W’s most iconic projects, including the San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore, the El Charro Road improvements, and numerous Costco Wholesale and Gas Station developments. Each project reflected his meticulous attention to detail, his ability to anticipate challenges, and his knack for creating innovative solutions. Hearing friends and family praise the completed projects brought him immense pride, knowing the effort and collaboration that went into making them a success.

While his technical contributions were remarkable, Andy’s true legacy lies in his mentorship. A natural teacher, he encouraged younger engineers and drafters to ask questions, embrace learning, and think creatively. His approachable style and commitment to sharing knowledge left a lasting impression on countless team members. For Andy, the reward was simple but profound—he loved hearing that what he taught someone helped them solve a problem or tackle a new challenge.

Andy’s approach to his career was grounded in principles that are as relevant today as they were when he began: embrace innovation, communicate effectively, and foster collaboration. He believes in the power of teamwork and the importance of bringing great minds together to develop solutions that make a difference. His dedication and commitment to excellence have left an indelible mark on the company and those who have had the privilege to work alongside him.

Chuck McCallum, CEO of K+W, reflected on Andy's profound impact, saying, “I personally worked with Andy as a member of my team early in my career at K+W. Andy’s passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence have left an incredible mark on myself and K+W. His ability to think outside the box, solve complex problems, and mentor others has inspired everyone around him. Andy’s ownership of a project and his desire for excellence will continue to guide us for years to come. We’re grateful for all he’s contributed and wish him the very best in this next chapter.”

As Andy transitions into retirement, he’s looking forward to the next chapter of his life. With plans to move to Nevada, spend time with his grandchildren, and pursue his passions for woodworking and hotrod building, he’s ready for a new adventure. Still, K+W will always hold a special place in his heart. Reflecting on his career, he shares, “This company has been more than a workplace— it’s been a journey filled with incredible people, meaningful projects, and countless memories.”
