As projects become larger, faster, and more complex, leadership requires more than technical expertise. It demands strategic thinking, operational discipline, proactive communication, and the ability to lead seamlessly across teams, disciplines, and evolving client demands, all of which directly shape how projects perform.

K+W continues to invest in strengthening that capability, bringing senior leaders together for its Senior Leaders Bootcamp, a focused, high-impact experience designed to elevate how the firm delivers across today’s most demanding projects.

Held in Concord, California, the bootcamp centered on a clear objective: strengthen internal alignment to create a more consistent, confident, and superior experience for clients.

The day opened with a keynote from Chuck McCallum, PE, CEO of K+W, on enterprise stewardship and the role leadership plays in shaping both project outcomes and the long-term strength of the firm.

“The complexity of the projects we are delivering today requires leaders who can think beyond their individual discipline and operate with an enterprise mindset,” said McCallum. “This bootcamp was designed to strengthen the collaboration, accountability, and coordination required to deliver at a higher level for our clients.”

Leaders then worked through real project scenarios, focusing on identifying breakdowns early and resolving them before they impact schedule, cost, or momentum. The discussions centered on improving communication, strengthening handoffs, and tightening coordination across mission critical, infrastructure, industrial, and large-scale developments.

As Marilynn Stratton, CPSM, Chief Strategy Officer, emphasized, the client perspective was central to the conversations throughout the day.

“Our clients are operating in environments where speed, complexity, entitlement challenges, capital pressure, and evolving project demands are all colliding at once,” said Stratton. “Elevating the client experience requires more than strong delivery. It requires understanding how clients think, what they need, and how our processes support them at every stage.”

Building on this focus on client experience, the team then participated in a session with ClearlyRated, led by Pete Cowing. The presentation explored how firms are turning client experience into a measurable driver of growth and retention, emphasizing proactive communication and stronger partnership. Leaders worked through empathy mapping exercises to better anticipate client needs and improve engagement across each phase of a project.

Throughout the day, cross-disciplinary sessions brought teams together to operate more effectively as one across every phase of delivery. Organized by key market sectors, teams identified opportunities to refine processes, strengthen transitions between disciplines, and enhance collaboration and responsiveness to deliver more consistent, high-quality outcomes.

The day concluded with leaders stepping outside their usual roles, working alongside team members they do not typically collaborate with. A team-based Thai stir-fry cooking challenge brought a different kind of energy to the experience, reinforcing camaraderie, healthy competition, and connection across the firm.

The takeaway is clear: in today’s environment, the teams that communicate effectively, align early, and execute consistently are the ones that deliver with confidence for their clients.
