25800 Clawiter Road – Amazon Data Center

The 25800 Clawiter Road project involves the development of Amazon's new data center in Hayward, California. This facility is part of a larger four-building complex that totals over 600,000 square feet. The project includes three industrial-use buildings, and a cutting-edge data center designed to deliver 49MW of power. K+W played a critical role in providing civil engineering and survey services from the entitlement phase through construction administration, ensuring that the infrastructure was meticulously planned and executed.

K+W was responsible for a range of services, including lot line adjustments, offsite improvements, and onsite development from preliminary grading to final construction documents. One of the standout aspects of this project was the design and installation of a robust fiber optic underground duct bank system, consisting of twelve 6-inch diameter conduits encased in concrete. This fiber communication network was a top priority, and K+W had to closely coordinate the design with all gravity utilities on-site to prevent elevation conflicts during installation.

Given the data center’s high-security requirements, significant collaboration occurred with Amazon’s security team to design effective perimeter fencing, vehicle access controls, and surveillance systems. The power infrastructure was another critical focus, with the project featuring a new substation and a backup generator yard to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. Coordination with PG&E to bring new transmission lines to the site is ongoing to make the facility fully operational.

In addition to addressing security and power concerns, K+W also designed the data center’s water-cooling system supply with sustainability in mind. The system was designed to allow for an easy transition to recycled water once available, highlighting the firm's forward-thinking approach.

One of the primary challenges of this project was adapting the site, initially not intended for a data center, to meet Amazon’s specific needs. The complex coordination with the Hayward Fire Department, Union Pacific Railroad, and Caltrans, alongside security and utility concerns, required innovative problem-solving and close collaboration with all stakeholders.

Ultimately, K+W successfully modified the site to accommodate Amazon's data center requirements, ensuring that the facility met stringent security, utility, and power demands. The 25800 Clawiter Road project is a testament to K+W's ability to deliver complex engineering solutions for innovative, technology driven clients like Amazon, showcasing the firm’s expertise in civil engineering, innovative design strategies, and capacity to navigate intricate challenges to achieve outstanding results.
