Surveying at Reno Technology Center
Surveying at Reno Technology Center
In the vast, high-desert landscape of Nevada is the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC), where innovation and opportunity converge. This ambitious project showcases the power of collaboration, adaptability, and precision engineering.
The K+W team took on the critical task of surveying two areas at the Reno Technology Center site. Covering multiple phases of development, the project demanded a multifaceted approach to address the site’s unique challenges. In late December 2023, just as the green light was given, our team mobilized swiftly. Within days, survey crews were on-site, equipped with quads and 4x4 vehicles, ready to tackle the rugged terrain. The logistics were a feat in themselves, moving both personnel and equipment to a site of this scale in such a short timeline shows our team’s problem solving and responsiveness in action.
At the start of the year, the project site was a blank slate—an expanse of dirt, hills, and valleys marked by dramatic elevation changes and intricate natural drainage systems. These features presented challenges as well as opportunities for innovation as the K+W team conducted extensive ALTA and topographic surveys so they could capture every nuance of the terrain.
Active construction was already underway, with the foundation for one building in place and another half-framed. Surveying in such conditions required a high degree of coordination with on-site crews. The team implemented a comprehensive safety plan and utilized aerial drone surveys alongside traditional methods to navigate the ever-changing conditions. This hybrid approach allowed for real-time updates to reflect construction progress, ensuring accurate data for all stakeholders.
This portion of the Reno Technology Center includes five industrial buildings, utilities, access points, drainage basins, and roadwork. Future plans propose an additional four buildings along a hillside, as well as designs to mitigate waterway impacts and facilitate extensive grading. These components are critical to accommodate the site's rapid growth and the region's broader vision as a technology and logistics hub.
The K+W team’s meticulous attention to detail extended beyond capturing existing conditions. Using a full-grid aerial survey, the team assessed how much earthwork would be needed to flatten valleys and build the necessary infrastructure. This data was indispensable for guiding future construction and expansion efforts.
For K+W, this project is a testament to our ability to adapt, innovate, and deliver exceptional results, even under tight timelines and challenging conditions. As the Reno Technology Center rises, it joins the ranks of transformative projects that define the area and its role in driving Nevada’s economic and technological future. It’s not just about building for today—it’s about paving the way for generations of progress.
