Washington Hospital
Washington Hospital
Washington Hospital has been reimagined through a multi-phase Facilities Master Plan adopted in 2000, designed to expand and modernize critical care services for Fremont’s growing community. K+W supported this transformation by providing comprehensive civil engineering services across the 20-acre campus, including site design, utility planning, stormwater management, and ADA/street improvements.
A key challenge of this project was maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations while major improvements were constructed. Careful planning, strategic phasing, and OSHPD-1 compliance ensured critical care facilities remained fully functional throughout all stages of development.
The improvements included the construction of a 37,000-square-foot Central Plant with underground utility tunnels and a campus-wide 12-kilovolt electrical distribution system, delivering the additional capacity necessary to support future growth. The expansion also introduced a new Emergency Department featuring hybrid operating rooms, along with 116 new patient beds and additional operating rooms to accommodate the hospital’s growing demand. To improve access and circulation, the project delivered a 658-car parking garage and a new ADA-accessible main entry, while extensive site demolition, grading, and stormwater planning were coordinated to maintain ambulance and patient access throughout construction.
Every improvement was designed not only to enhance facilities today but also to position Washington Hospital for future growth. From expanded emergency care to improved campus access, this project highlights how thoughtful engineering and planning can strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure hospitals grow alongside the communities they serve.
